Cited answer

Also called: Source citation · Grounded answer · Answer with sources

A cited answer is a reply, usually written by an AI, that names the document or passage it is based on, so the reader can check it.

Citations are the main defence against AI answers that sound right but are made up. When every answer points to a passage in a knowledge base, a person can check it in seconds and fix the source if it is wrong.

The other half is refusing well. A system that cites its sources should also say when the answer is not in them, instead of guessing.

How Risti does it

In Risti’s Library, Try it lets you ask what a caller would ask, optionally Answer as a team, and see the answer with its source (“Source:”). When nothing fits, it says Not in your sources: Risti never guesses, and off-topic questions are declined.

Each source shows its usage with the cited lines, so you can see what MaryAI actually used. Agents without rights to manage the Library see “What Risti can use for you”.
